30Black Ships

During those months, they missed each other greatly and communicated regularly. While he was busy being a semi-prosperous merchant, Helena was busier than ever at her port duties.

Beginning soon after she and Jack returned from their adventure on the moon, there was increased activity in space around the Federation. There were reports, some substantiated, of black ships firing upon both military and merchant vessels around the edges of the Federation. Soon, the directive came down from Federation Command that all citizens were to exercise extreme caution venturing near the known borders of Federation space and were advised to not do so. Of course, Jack had to do so since that was his job as some of his customers and suppliers were outside Federation space. To Helena, he recounted several instances of close calls with the black ships. Though his merchantmen may not have been armed as heavily as a typical military vessel, they were very fast, and somehow he still made money while evading destruction. Finally, he came home from his four-month business tour, loaded down with artifacts and such, but very concerned.

“Helena, it is like the Old West on Earth. People are scared. These black ships appear, cause rapid destruction, and then vanish like they were never there at all. And they are huge, some as large as one half mile in length. Their lasers are more powerful than anything I have observed, and in my business, it pays to be observant. I think I will stay close to home, namely here, for some time. Hopefully, it will settle down out there.”

Chuckling, Helena said, “I am so sorry to hear this, Jack, but I have an idea. Why don’t you move in with me, all official-like and we can share our concerns and much else together.”

“Well now, that is the best idea I have heard in, well, ever! I agree. Let’s celebrate by getting you pregnant. What do you say? The world needs more dedicated government officials and mini merchants!”

‘Oh oh,’ Jack thought. Helena was now quiet. He may have stepped too far. He hoped he hadn’t blown it as he thought Helena was someone truly special. He certainly did not want to lose her.

“I agree, Jack, but there are several conditions. First, what I am about to tell you is strictly between us. It is about my background. Two, I am not anyone’s slave girl. What you have seen so far is who I am - take it or leave it. No slacking off just because we’re a ‘regular thing’. Third, I still work at my job. I love it and feel I contribute much here. What do you say?”

“I say, let’s celebrate!”

For the next several years, things went great. They worked well together. They had common goals. Her revelation about her background was not a problem for him. He didn’t care that she really was an alien – he had always figured most people were alien in their thinking anyway. She did go away at times to her homeworld to do, well, something, there, but he carried on as usual.
